In The Window Placement - Evaluation Writing and Paired Exercise
During this week's lecture for the Professional Practice and Placement module, we discussed evaluation writing in depth with lecturer Anna who gave us great tips, examples to look at and an outline for the word count. Anna also encouraged us to write an analytical blog post at the end of our placement in order to generate some content for the evaluation which will be submitted for assessment at the end of this semester. As part of the same lecture, Anna had us do an exercise in which we were paired off in separate calls on Microsoft Teams to discuss our placements. We had to answer the following questions:
- What is our planned placement?
- Thinking about ourselves and our career aspirations, why did we choose to undertake this specific placement?
... and...
- What are our career aims and objectives that we hope to learn/experience/develop during our placement?
After running through all of the questions from my notes, we then took turns to answer them. It was great to hear about Hannah's placement plans and goals in more depth. She is doing a placement in a local primary school, in which she will run art workshops for the Year 5 classes. Although schools are not open as usual due to the current situation, key workers children are still attending so Hannah has the option to either run the workshop as and when planned with the smaller number of pupils or wait until school attendance is normal and teach standard class sizes. Because her mother works as a teacher at the school with the same children, she is able to go into the school in the current lockdown with her being a member of the same household. She is currently undecided as to what she will do, but said that if she waits she will have to change the workshop as what she had originally planned is catered to the curriculum for this past term and the subject matter for their art classes is about to change. Hannah had initially hoped to find a placement at a secondary school as she wanted to experience teaching older children, but struggled to find a placement elsewhere at this time. She aspires to be a teacher after finishing her degree, so this placement is perfect for her!
Hannah then asked me the same three questions and although I obviously already know what I am doing for my placement and why, I found that discussing it with someone really helped to cement what my goals and aspirations are. Shadowing the exhibition process from selection to installation and then proposing, promoting and installing my own exhibition meant I would learn a great deal from one placement, which is ultimately why the In The Window opportunity interested me. It is also an excellent networking opportunity as well as a great chance to develop my art practice by exhibiting my work and getting to perform in a Covid-safe space, in a time when we have limited opportunities to do so. I hope that by staging my artwork I will explore the work to its full potential and then be able to develop it further afterwards. Not forgetting, I get to learn how the selection and application process works, to see the inner workings of a gallery space and learn how best to promote exhibitions and art events. Lastly, as I plan to stay in Stoke-on-Trent due to work and home commitments after finishing my degree I wanted to work in a local space and work with local creatives. I have learned so much during this placement so far and look forward to finishing it, reflecting upon my time at AirSpace and writing the evaluation for submission will help me to evaluate exactly what I have learned and will take from this experience ready to be used in future.
