In The Window Placement - Week 7 - Proposal Pack, Tutorials and Visiting Artists
As I started my placement much earlier than is usual, I was yet to complete the final draft of my Proposal Pack including a cover letter, CV, proposal and mini folio. Glen at AirSpace offered me the placement after sending only an Expression of Interest. I had a tutorial at the end of last week with our module leader Rebecca to go over what I had done so far. My cover letter and CV needed only a few simple changes such as not having the date on my cover letter which is something I really should have noticed and changing the order of my experience on my CV as well as adding a referee. Rebecca was happy with my mini folio as it was other than removing the design feature that I had used across all of the documents, she felt it looked good for the cover letter, CV and proposal but distracted from the images of my work included the mini folio. Finally, my proposal, which I had found hardest to complete, needed the title changing to make it clearer and some tweaking throughout the text to make sure everything needed was included whilst also cutting back a little bit where necessary. I have now converted the separate documents into one PDF ready to be submitted for assessment and am happy with the pack overall.
I have found tutorials throughout the placement and proposal process so far to be especially helpful. Rebecca has been in touch each week for us to ask any questions, for her to offer advice and to practice certain skills through different exercises - the most recent of which was to give a presentation. The date of the presentation clashed with installing the exhibition at AirSpace but with encouragement from Rebecca (who has a studio in the same space) I gave my presentation from the gallery. I decided to do a quick tour of the new exhibition and talk about the installation as well as what I had learned so far from both installing the exhibition and the placement so far.
Alongside this module and our others we also have visiting artists deliver lectures via Microsoft Teams. After each of which we can sign up for a personal tutorial with the artist, I try to sign up every time. So far this year we have heard from Nora Aurrekoetxea and Danny Treacy, both lectures and sign-up tutorials were interesting and enlightening but the tutorial I had with Danny Treacy was particularly helpful as he had recently exhibited at AirSpace Gallery 'In The Window'. I heard about the residency and the work Collective Territories (as well as Danny Treacy's art practice and previous exhibitions) in depth in the lecture and then was able to ask questions specific to exhibiting in the space in the tutorial directly after. I was already relatively familiar with Collective Territories thanks to researching previous exhibitions at AirSpace before starting my placement but it was great to hear about the work and the exhibition directly from the artist. We also discussed my practice, his initial thoughts on my work so far and the direction and setting of my work in future which will be helpful in resolving some existing work that could then be used for an exhibition.
