AirSpace Gallery Residency - Week 3 & 4
Having taken two weeks off work to settle into the studio and begin making work at the beginning of this month, I could not afford to miss out on Halloween bookings over the last fortnight so have had limited time in the studio. Today is my first full day back and I am looking forward to cracking on with things although I'm a little drained from working so much over the spooky season. Although I have documented bits and pieces of both my work, and any time I did find to get in the studio and have posted them on Instagram. I also managed to find time to do a bit of sewing but have had little time to do anything else.
I am currently waiting on a quote for a sheet of clear acrylic to be cut to size and machined to order, having sent over info and a CAD file to two separate companies, with plans to use this to make a clear bed of nails. In the mean time, I have two boxes of nearly 1000 nails sat in my studio space waiting to be used for said bed of nails which I've had some time to play with in the studio. Although I look forward to using them for their intended purpose. I have also edited my pattern for a full face hood or mask which I have tested with two different materials and look forward to putting the pattern to good use as I want to continue to use masks in my work as well as creating new works to be used as props.
We have an interim exhibition coming up in the window space at AirSpace which we found out the dates for in the last fortnight - we have to have our proposal in by mid-November and my dates happen to be first out of the three of us. I'm not entirely sure what I want to do for this particular exhibition but have begun sketch booking ideas and 'performance-doodling' in the studio which I record to look back on to consider how those actions might be used or developed to plan a live work to be performed within the space alongside whatever I exhibit.
I have also started writing both a funding bid for the solo show after our meeting with the visual arts relationship manager at ACE, and a proposal for the window. So far these are skeletons made of notes, questions, and bullet points which will need bulking out asap. This is going to be my main priority for this week.
Finally, last week we had a meeting with Glen to discuss which potential mentors we had considered for the gallery to approach to support us during the residency and this morning I found out that artist Rosanna Cade has agreed to be my mentor. It was great to start the first day back with this good news and I have sent over my availability for the next couple of weeks so we can arrange our first session. I think this will be vital in helping me finalise ideas for the upcoming interim exhibition.
